Tool changers for CNC gantry routers

An automatic tool change has two parts: the tool magazine that holds the tools, and a spindle that releases and clamps the tool together with its tool holder. Both must use the same holder, i.e. SK20 with SK20 or SK30 with SK30. The control must also support tool changes.

Tool magazines: rack or carousel

  • Rack for SK20 with 6 or 10 positions, the 6-position rack also with housing
  • Rack for SK30 with 6 or 10 positions, each also with housing
  • Carousel with 8 positions, extendable, with cover, for mounting on the gantry

Milling spindles with tool changer

For automatic changes the machine needs a spindle with tool change. Here you will find the BZT HF tool change spindles with 3.5 and 7.0 kW and SK30 holder, plus Elte HF spindles with SK20, SK30 and ISO10 holders. The Elte models are also listed under Elte tool changers, Hiteco spindles with HSK and SK30 holders under HF spindles.

Measuring tool length

After every change the control needs the length of the new tool. A tool length sensor does this: as a probe with micro switch, with a 19 mm probe head in NPN or PNP design, for 5 V or digital for 24 V. The sensors are also listed under tool length sensors.

Whether and how a tool changer can be retrofitted to your machine depends on machine, spindle and control. Send us the machine type and year of manufacture and we will check.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need for automatic tool changing?
A tool magazine (rack or carousel), a spindle with tool change and tool holders of the same size, for example SK30. Usually you also need a tool length sensor so that the control knows the length of every tool. The control must support tool changes.
Rack or carousel?
The rack holds 6 or 10 tools side by side, for SK20 or SK30, with housing depending on the version. The carousel holds 8 tools, is mounted on the gantry and extends for the change. Which one fits better depends on the space in the working area and the number of tools.
Can I retrofit a tool changer?
That depends on machine, spindle and control. Tell us the machine type and year of manufacture and we will check which combination fits.
What do I need a tool length sensor for?
It measures the tool length after the change so that the control works with the correct Z height. It is available as a probe with micro switch, with a 19 mm probe head in NPN or PNP design, and for 5 V or digital for 24 V.
