Choosing Collets by Holder

Which collet fits is determined by the holder of your spindle or router motor. It is usually stated in the item name, such as “ER20” for an HF spindle or “ER16” for an AMB router motor. Collet, collet nut and holder must have the same size.

ER Collets: ER16, ER20, ER25, ER32 and ER40

ER collets are standardised in accordance with DIN 6499 and ISO 15488 respectively. The number indicates the size; the largest clamping diameter grows with it. Our collet sets cover these ranges:

The matching collet nuts are available for ER20, ER25 and ER32, plus collet wrenches in the same sizes.

Collets for Router Motors from Suhner, Kress, AMB and Mafell

Router motors without an ER holder need their own collets. For Suhner router motors with 1050/1550 W and with 1800 W there are collets with 3 mm and a three-piece set with 3, 3.175 (1/8 inch) and 6 mm. A set with the same sizes is available for router motors from Kress, AMB and Mafell. Router motors with an ER16 or ER20 holder, for example the AMB FME-P ER16 or Mafell FM1000 NC-ER16, on the other hand, take ER collets.

Spindles and router motors with an ER holder can be found under CNC spindles and milling spindles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which collet fits my spindle?
That depends on the holder of the spindle or router motor. A spindle with an ER20 holder needs ER20 collets and an ER20 collet nut. Router motors without an ER holder, for example from Suhner, Kress or AMB, use their own collets.
What do ER16, ER20, ER25, ER32 and ER40 mean?
ER is a standardised collet system (DIN 6499, ISO 15488). The number stands for the size. The larger it is, the larger the clamping diameter: our sets go up to 10 mm for ER16, 13 mm for ER20, 16 mm for ER25, 20 mm for ER32 and 26 mm for ER40.
Which clamping diameter do I need?
The diameter of the cutter shank. For a cutter with a 6 mm shank, use the 6 mm collet. Imperial shanks such as 3.175 mm (1/8 inch) need their own collets, for example in the sets for Suhner and for Kress, AMB and Mafell.
Does every collet nut fit every collet?
No. Collet nut and collet must be the same size, so an ER20 nut goes with an ER20 collet. We offer collet nuts and wrenches for ER20, ER25 and ER32, and collet nuts for Suhner router motors as well.
