The CNC milling machine has been ordered and delivery is on the way. What now? Careful commissioning lays the foundation for precise results and a long service life for your machine. This guide takes you through the process step by step.
Step 1: Prepare the Site
- Foundation: a stable, level surface, ideally concrete or a heavy workbench
- Load-bearing capacity: CNC gantry mills weigh 50–300 kg, and the floor must be able to carry this
- Vibration damping: rubber pads or machine feet under the machine
- Power supply: a separate fuse (16 A) for the machine, ideally with an RCD (residual-current device)
- Space: at least 50 cm all round for access and maintenance
Step 2: Position and Level the Machine
- Place the machine on the foundation and level it roughly
- Place a spirit level on the gantry and on the machine table
- Fine-tune with the levelling feet until the gantry and table are level in both axes
- Important: a machine that is not level produces workpieces that are not true
Step 3: Connect the Electronics
- Connect the controller box to the machine (motor cables, limit switches, emergency stop)
- Connect the spindle (power supply and, if applicable, frequency inverter)
- Check that the emergency stop switch works. Always do this first.
- Test the limit switches: move each axis by hand to its limit switch
- Establish the USB/Ethernet connection to the control PC
Step 4: Set Up the Software
- Install the CNC control software and load the machine parameters
- Calibrate the axes: measure the travel and set steps/mm
- Carry out homing: the machine learns its zero points
- Test the travel in each axis (slowly, without a tool)
Step 5: First Workpiece
For your first milling operation we recommend a simple 2D workpiece made of wood:
- Clamp soft wood (e.g. spruce)
- Insert a simple single-flute cutter (Ø 6 mm)
- Set the workpiece zero (X, Y, Z)
- Choose conservative cutting data (spindle speed: 15,000 rpm, feed rate: 1500 mm/min, depth: 3 mm)
- Test the program in a dry run (Z higher than the workpiece)
- Mill the first workpiece and assess the result

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to commission a CNC milling machine?
For a pre-assembled machine such as those from BZT, allow 2–4 hours for set-up, levelling, electronics and the first workpiece. Self-assembly kits can take 1–3 days.
Do I need a special power connection?
Most CNC gantry mills run on a normal 230 V socket with a 16 A fuse. Larger machines with powerful HF spindles may require a three-phase connection (400 V).
Can I set up the machine in a cellar or garage?
Yes, provided the floor is load-bearing and level. Consider noise protection for neighbours and sufficient ventilation (especially when machining plastic), and plan for an extraction system.
