HF Spindles for CNC Milling Machines: SK20 vs SK30, Air-Cooled vs. Water-Cooled

The spindle is the heart of every CNC milling machine. It determines which materials you can machine, which surface quality you achieve and how productively your machine works. High-frequency (HF) spindles have established themselves as the most capable solution in CNC machining. But the choice is wide: SK20 or SK30? Air-cooled or water-cooled? 1.5 kW or 5 kW? In this guide we explain the differences and help you find the right HF spindle for your application.

What is an HF spindle and how does it work?

A high-frequency spindle is an electric drive in which the motor is integrated directly into the spindle shaft. There is no gearbox, no belts, no mechanical transmission. The three-phase motor is controlled by a frequency inverter, which regulates the spindle speed continuously.

Advantages over Conventional Router Motors

  • Continuously variable spindle speed: From a few hundred to over 40,000 rpm, adjustable to suit material and tool
  • Smooth running: Thanks to precision-balanced rotors and high-quality bearings. This is directly reflected in the surface finish
  • Standardised tool holder: Fast, repeatable tool changes using SK or ER holders
  • High power density: 0.75 to 7 kW in a compact design
  • Long service life: 10,000+ operating hours with correct maintenance

Tool Holder: SK20 vs SK30

The tool holder is one of the most important distinguishing features of HF spindles. The two most widespread standards in CNC gantry milling are SK20 and SK30 (also called ISO20 and ISO30).

SK20 (ISO20)

The smaller taper standard is suitable for light to medium milling work:

  • Tool shank diameter: Up to 10 mm (up to 13 mm with ER collet)
  • Typical spindle power: 0.75 to 2.2 kW
  • Maximum spindle speed: Up to 40,000 rpm and higher
  • Application: Wood, plastic, aluminium (light cuts), engraving, model making
  • Advantage: Compact design, low mass, very high spindle speeds possible

SK30 (ISO30)

The larger taper standard for medium to heavy milling work:

  • Tool shank diameter: Up to 20 mm (up to 25 mm with ER collet)
  • Typical spindle power: 2 to 7 kW
  • Maximum spindle speed: Up to 24,000 rpm
  • Application: Aluminium (heavy cuts), brass, copper, steel (to a limited extent), mould making
  • Advantage: Higher rigidity, larger tools, greater machining volume

Which holder is the right one?

The decision depends on your main area of use:

  • Do you mill mainly wood and plastic with occasional aluminium machining? SK20 is sufficient and offers higher spindle speeds for fine surfaces.
  • Do you machine aluminium or brass regularly with larger tool diameters? SK30 is the better choice.
  • Do you want to use an automatic tool changer (ATC)? Both standards are ATC-compatible, but SK30 offers more tool options.

Cooling: Air-Cooled vs. Water-Cooled

HF spindles generate heat during operation, which has to be dissipated. The cooling method significantly affects performance, service life and installation effort.

Air-Cooled HF Spindles

An integrated or external fan blows cooling air over the spindle surface.

  • Advantages: Simple installation, no cooling circuit required, lower cost
  • Disadvantages: Higher noise, limited continuous operation, dust load on the fan
  • Typical use: Workshops with intermittent operation, machines without an enclosure
  • Power range: 0.75 to 3 kW

Water-Cooled HF Spindles

An external cooling circuit removes heat via a heat exchanger or radiator.

  • Advantages: Significantly quieter, better temperature stability, higher continuous power, longer bearing life
  • Disadvantages: Additional cost for the cooling unit, installation of the cooling circuit, frost protection must be considered
  • Typical use: Commercial continuous operation, series production, closed machine enclosures
  • Power range: 1.5 to 7 kW and more

Our Advice on Cooling

For getting started and occasional use, an air-cooled spindle is the pragmatic choice. As soon as you regularly mill for several hours at a stretch or run the spindle in an enclosure, investing in water cooling is worthwhile. The better temperature stability leads to more consistent milling results and significantly longer bearing life.

Power ranges: which kW class do you need?

The spindle power determines how much material can be removed per unit of time. Here is a classification:

0.75–1.5 kW

Suitable for engraving, wood, plastic and light aluminium machining. Ideal for compact machines and model making. Tool diameter up to 6 mm.

2–3 kW

The mid-range for versatile applications. Wood, MDF, HPL and aluminium at medium feed rates. Tool diameter up to 12 mm. This power class covers most semi-professional requirements.

4–7 kW

For professional continuous use: large tool diameters, high feed rates, aluminium and brass in roughing operation. Typical for machines from 1200 x 1000 mm travel.

Practical tip: In normal operation, a spindle should run at 50 to 70% of its rated power. Anyone who works permanently at the power limit considerably shortens the service life of the bearings. It is better to choose one power level higher and mill with ease.

Manufacturers at a Glance

Several spindle manufacturers have established themselves in the European CNC market:

Elte (Italy)

A long-established manufacturer with a wide range for CNC applications. Known for robust, durable spindles in SK20 and SK30. BZT uses Elte spindles in many machine types.

Hiteco / Unitec (Italy)

Hiteco (formerly Unitec) is one of the largest spindle manufacturers in the world. Wide portfolio from 0.75 to 20+ kW. Particularly strong in water-cooled spindles for industrial use. Available in the BZT range under Unitec/Hiteco.

AMB (Germany)

German manufacturer (formerly Kress) of compact router motors and HF spindles. A popular choice for entry-level machines and retrofits. Solid quality at a fair price.

Isel (Germany)

Manufacturer of CNC components and spindles, particularly widespread in the semi-professional segment. Spindles with ER holder as an alternative to SK systems.

Frequency Inverter: The Indispensable Partner

Every HF spindle requires a frequency inverter, which regulates the spindle speed continuously. The inverter must match the spindle: in power, output voltage and control protocol.

Important selection criteria:

  • Power: The inverter should cover at least the rated power of the spindle, preferably 20% more
  • Output voltage: 400 V for most HF spindles, 230 V for compact spindles
  • Modbus/RS485: Allows control via the CNC software
  • Ramp times: Adjustable acceleration and braking ramps protect the spindle and tool

In the BZT online shop you will find suitable frequency inverters for all common spindle types.

Selection Guide: The Right HF Spindle in 5 Steps

  1. Determine the material: What do you mainly mill? Wood/plastic → SK20 is sufficient. Aluminium/brass → SK30.
  2. Determine the power: Tool diameter and feed rate define the requirement. 2 to 3 kW covers most cases.
  3. Choose the cooling: Occasional use → air-cooled. Continuous operation → water-cooled.
  4. Check for automatic tool changing: If yes, you need an ATC-compatible spindle with a pneumatic release unit.
  5. Match the frequency inverter: Power and voltage must suit the spindle.

Which is better: SK20 or SK30 spindle?

That depends on the intended use. SK20 is suitable for light to medium work in wood, plastic and light aluminium, with spindle speeds up to 40,000 rpm and tool diameters up to 10 mm. SK30 is the right choice for heavier machining tasks in aluminium and brass with tools up to 20 mm in diameter. Anyone who mainly works wood is well served by SK20. Anyone who mills metal should go for SK30.

Do I need a water-cooled spindle?

Water cooling is recommended for regular continuous operation lasting several hours, for closed machine enclosures or for spindle power of 3 kW and above. The better temperature stability leads to more consistent results and longer bearing life. For occasional use and power up to 2 kW, an air-cooled spindle is generally sufficient.

How many kW does an HF spindle need for aluminium?

For occasional aluminium machining with small tool diameters (up to 6 mm), 1.5 to 2 kW is sufficient. For regular aluminium machining with tools up to 12 mm, 2 to 3 kW is recommended. Professional continuous use with large tools and high feed rates requires 4 to 7 kW. In normal operation, the spindle should run at 50 to 70% of its rated power.

Which frequency inverter do I need for my HF spindle?

The frequency inverter must match the spindle: its power should be at least the rated power of the spindle, preferably 20% more. The output voltage must be correct: 400 V for most HF spindles, 230 V for compact models. Modbus/RS485 interfaces for control via the CNC software and adjustable ramp times to protect the spindle and tool are helpful.
